In 1975, the communist group Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh was in full force. The civilians living in the city that time were forcefully evacuated. Those who were against and did not agree with the group were tortured and killed in prison or execution camps. Join this unique tour of the chilling history of Phnom Penh as the tour guide brings you to the mass grave site known as the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek where 1,386,734 people were buried. You will be picked up from the hotel and brought to the former beautiful orchard which became a burial ground for these people affected by the past regime. See a large memorial built to remember the victims who were brutally slain. It was marked by a Buddhist stupa made of acrylic glass sides. It contains more than 5,000 human skulls and also used as a place of meditation. As you explore the area, you will notice that most of the mass graves are visibly seen raise from the ground. Most of the skeletons are not yet excavated until now. Many of these victims were former political prisoners who were kept at the Tuol Sleng detention centre. When it rains heavily, bones, teeth, and clothing sometimes surface since a large number of bodies are still buried in shallow mass graves. If you encounter any, visitors are asked to notify a memorial park officer or their tour guide. After the graveyard and memorial tour, you will be brought back to the hotel.
