The early inhabitants of the islands were American Indians. Including the Arawak people But as the centuries passed The Carribeans began to take their place, eventually making them the majority of the population. Europeans exploring the Americas recorded the first sighting of the island in 1512 by the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon between the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Ruled from Spain, France and England, but no nations settled and established settlements on these two islands seriously.


Turks and Caicos share a cultural component with the Bahamas, as many of the indigenous people are of Bahamian descent and reside or were born in the Bahamas. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a geographic part of the Bahamas.
