Originally known as Nyasaland, the British and Portuguese used to compete for it until 1902.Nyasaland became the protected territory of England and in 1907, Nyasaland was Officially became British protectorate, later in 1953, Nyasaland joined the Central African Federation with North and South Rhodesia. (Zambia and Zimbabwe) in 1963 from the Federation. And independence on July 6, 1964, Hastings Kamuzu Banda was the first president of the country.

 

Malawi opened diplomatic ties with the Republic of South Africa in 1967 and have strong ties to each other until now. The president rules the country in a more dictatorial way in order to stabilize the country in politics. The opposition has formed movements such as the Socialist League of Malawi and the Malawi Freedom Movement (Mafremo), as well as the Congress for the Second Republic, in action. But the resistance to President Banda waned in late 1981 when Mafremo chief Orton Chirwa was arrested, prompting Banda to rule the country like a dictator for more than 30 years.
